On December 14th, China Energy Engineering Group Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute Limited received the bid notification and confirmed winning the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) general contract for the 1000 megawatt photovoltaic project at the Northern Laos Interconnected Clean Energy Base, a project by China General Nuclear Power Group. This project represents the largest clean energy initiative in Laos, the highest single-unit capacity in Southeast Asia, and also the largest single-contract project for Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute Limited, marking a significant breakthrough in their overseas general contracting business.

Situated in the Udomxay Province of Laos, approximately 30 kilometers from Mohan Town in China, the project plans to install 1000 megawatts of photovoltaic capacity. It involves the construction of a new 500 kV substation, a 500 kV transmission line connecting to the Nam Mo substation in Laos with an additional interval substation, and the simultaneous construction of a maintenance center. Once the project reaches full capacity, it is expected to generate an annual electricity output of 1.687 billion kilowatt-hours, saving approximately 510,400 tons of standard coal annually. This corresponds to a reduction in annual emissions, including 1.4038 million tons of carbon dioxide, 269.95 tons of sulfur dioxide, 302.01 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 53.99 tons of particulate matter, while conserving 204.15 million cubic meters of freshwater.

Upon completion, the project will leverage Laos' resource advantages for economic development, driving local green energy transition and socio-economic progress. It is expected to contribute to the improvement of local industries such as building materials and transportation, enhance infrastructure, boost local employment, elevate workforce skills, and stimulate regional development vitality. In addition to meeting local consumption needs, surplus electricity will be transmitted back to China, contributing to the China Southern Power Grid's addition of clean energy from outside the region. This will aid Laos in realizing its vision of becoming a "Southeast Asian energy storage battery," significantly enhancing Sino-Lao power interconnection capabilities.

Over the years, Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute Limited, as a leading member of Yunnan Province's "Going Global" Industry Alliance, has effectively utilized its geographical advantage radiating towards South and Southeast Asia. The corporation has undertaken and conducted various studies on China's power interconnection with neighboring countries and their national grid and new energy planning. Serving as a pioneer in energy and power, Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute Limited has actively developed and implemented new energy projects in neighboring countries such as Laos, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. By leading with energy and power grid planning, the corporation has seized new opportunities in overseas markets, promoting green development in the context of the "Belt and Road" initiative from a broader perspective. In collaboration with China General Nuclear Power Corporation, Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute Limited will deepen strategic cooperation, using the Northern Laos Photovoltaic Base project as a catalyst to inject momentum into their ongoing partnership. This will further integrate the two parties into the co-construction of the "Belt and Road," achieving a higher level of mutually beneficial cooperation. The corporation aims to contribute to the construction of a shared destiny community between China and Laos.
