The Eighth China–UK Energy Dialogue Held in Beijing
On March 17, the eighth China–UK Energy Dialogue was held in Beijing, co-chaired by Wang Hongzhi, Administrator of China’s National Energy Administration, and Ed Miliband, UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. The two sides carried out in-depth exchanges on clean energy technologies, energy transition pathways, energy security, and international energy governance.
Wang Hongzhi noted that China and the UK share broad common interests in the energy sector and have a solid foundation for cooperation; he expressed readiness to implement the important consensus of the two countries’ leaders and to advance more mutually beneficial results in China–UK energy collaboration.
Miliband said he looks forward to strengthening bilateral energy exchanges through the Dialogue and other mechanisms, jointly contributing to the global response to climate change.
After the meeting, Wang Hongzhi and Miliband signed the Memorandum of Understanding on China–UK Clean Energy Partnership, which identifies power market reform, grids, battery storage, offshore wind, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and clean low-carbon and renewable hydrogen as key cooperation areas. In support of the Dialogue, three side events will be convened: a China–UK Power Market Seminar; the 10th Annual Meeting of the China–UK Offshore Wind Industry Cooperation Steering Committee and its tenth-anniversary development seminar; and a China–UK CCUS Workshop, all aimed at deepening practical exchanges and exploring pragmatic cooperation opportunities.
Ambassador Wu Rolan, British Ambassador to China, and Jonathan Brearley, Chief Executive of the UK’s Ofgem, attended the meeting, as did Ren Jingdong, Deputy Administrator of the National Energy Administration, along with senior officials from relevant NEA departments.
